Offspring Character In Depth: Patrick Reid

Well colour me impressed ladies and gents! The Offspring comments section continues to fire with smart, insightful and interesting commentary on the series – so much so that I’m loathe to contribute because the bulk of my comments would be simply ‘Yeah, what she said!’ and ‘Oh yes, that too’ and ‘yep, that’s so true.’

Still, I won’t go quiet on you all just because I don’t want to sound stupid. I thought in the long break before The Proudmans and Co return, we could now look at the characters individually, break into who they are, what makes them tick.

Of course, the prime candidate to launch this is our resident Doc McBroody.
Sexy leaning since 2010
Let’s get it out of the way early, Matt Le Nevez is hot. Broody wounded hot. The sexy tattoo is hot, which I believe is the actor’s and just happens to be nice symmetry to wire around his body to his current character. The staring at Nina is hot. The dark man in scrubs is hot. The shirtless running is hot. The hallway sexy times are hot. There is no denying this and as the leading man he was setup to be, it’s a very good thing.

Patrick Plus: That Patrick, in some ways is an ultra-stereotype, with the broody, non-communication and he still manages to work is a plus. He has the perfect requisite sad tormented background and while he’d like to pretend he’s burying it all with success, the audience is via Nina exposed on the very rare glimpses to his deepest wounds and it is to Matt Le Nevez credit that this often happens without assistance of the script. He’s often, especially in this season, been asked to convey oh so much with so very little words and the big tick for Patrick Reid, is that we get it. We the viewers are despite the sometimes increasing frustration levels, on his side. We want better for Patrick but we understand that he can never be healed completely, hey presto life is laugh filled Friends episode. The wounds that he bears are also valid and real. This loss he’s experienced is life shaking, ground breaking reality and of course, it’s going to stick with him forever.

Patrick’s joy is also something to behold. The dream sequence smile and then his actual smile at finding Nina pregnant were both fantastic heartfelt moments in the show. His rooftop car park scene with Nina’s biological Dad, in which he connected the two’s slightly scattered behaviour with a sly grin, was touching and tender and showed us who Patrick could one day be: sensitive and sincere.

I also really enjoyed pissy Patrick. The VERY brief encounter between Patrick and Fitzroy Jesus, was actually, in my book, incredibly funny. The dislocating the shoulder laid it on thick for sure, but the resulting under his breath insults that he threw out combined with the dirty glares, gave Patrick’s occasionally one-tone broody a fresh flavour.

Crimes Against Reid: The other side of the coin is that Patrick is often a jerky broody cliché. The romantic brooding hero is of course, a classic story telling staple and in a contemporary setting, seen everywhere. The challenge though is making this character dimensional and at times, we lose Patrick’s dimensionality. He becomes almost deliberately, by the writers’ choice, tough and wounded. At moments when clearly, there is a misunderstanding and any slightly rational adult would comprehend and course correct, he becomes obtuse with Nina and so withdrawn that he looks to have chosen to become a selective mute.  The bowling alley car park sequence in which both Nina and Patrick admitted to bringing to worst out in each other, was by far, one of the most frustrating scenes of this season. Often with Patrick, I feel the writers’ created this amazing dialogue first and then give it to Patrick second. Sometime no matter how great the words, if they don’t fit the character or worst, you withhold them from the character because his defining ‘trait’ is not saying anything, then we lose connection.

The other major crime against Patrick Reid is the backstory conundrum. It feels like the writers haven’t quite grasped his drug addiction and how he stepped away from it and managed to recover enough to be functional. It feels as this was a great ‘broody’ stereotype to give this new character and now that we’re well into Patrick Reid and his life, they’re not quite sure how it makes him whole. This would also go for Patrick’s poorly used sister, who escaped an abusive relationship and is raising a child solo yet we lost this storyline the second it didn’t serve the A story. Patrick’s druggie past is often referenced when they want to give him a sense of danger or that he’s always going to be a challenge but it doesn’t feel connected to who he is now. I’m not expecting him to layout the awful terrible times for Nina, but the way in which we flirt with this backstory is tricky and feels awkward.

Smile like you mean it! Smile like we want it!
The break throughs: As noted by some very smart commenters in the comments section of the Season Four posts, Patrick’s finale episode ‘break through’ moment felt rushed, undeserved and settled not much. I give Offspring on a pass on this as they were writing in an uncertain future, and I appreciate their desire to not leave fans on a possible forever cliff hanger. However, it’s absolutely true. The Season Two finale in the street with him asking not for pity, or a second place consolation prize relationship was so much more real, so genuine and the words they spoke felt like Patrick and Nina. What, it seems, is universally acknowledge, is that Patrick’s family declaration, while hot and rom-com awesome, wasn’t enough to sweep away all the questions. As character, he needs to grow and a big part of this is question both his coping mechanisms and how they work with Nina.

In short: Patrick Reid is a beautiful, burdened, thoughtful character who needs to have levels other than ‘Broody’ for us to continue to invest in his emotional journey both as a future father, lover and man. And he should speak French as much as possible.

And just because, you know, it's been a long winter and ladies, we need a treat every now and then. The best of Patrick shirtless (I promise, this won't turn into a Tumblr squeal est!) And Matt Le Nevez, I apologise for the blatant perv fest below but, boy you look like you worked hard for those abs, let us celebrate them for you. In a totally non-creepy way!

So let's go, unleash your Patrick Reid thoughts.

  1. I would comment, but right now I'm at loss for words by how sexy he is, therefore thoughts are too inappropriate to post.

So my comment will be withheld until such thoughts fade (temporarily) and become slightly more articulate.

    ***k he's hot.

  2. I think Billie summed him up perfectly. It's time to get over your past, your man-child tendencies and man space up. I really think the writers missed an opportunity to give us more about Patrick. All we ever saw was him looking hurt and pained (which he did extraordinarily well I grant you). It would have been nice to get some dialogue. We know he's not particularly chatty, so it was unlikely there was going to be long, deep and meaningful discussions. But something more than the pained expressions would have been good. They could have used Kate and Martin more effectively I think. Some conversations like we saw in season 2 is what I wanted.

    1. All this is true but obviously that's not what the writers were going for. They were trying to hook middle aged women like me who think patrick is HOT.

  3. honestly Felicity - how are we supposed to comment insightfully after those pictures!

i want to see growth and bridging a gap between old patrick and new patrick. more honesty with Nina - when he was drunk and angry he was honest and said the things he needed to say. in fact it was close to what i had been shouting at the TV to Nina when she crawled out of the green sheets.

Yes I want the drug stuff out in the open - when, how did he get over it, what does he do to cope now without drugs, when does he still have urges - what feelings is he trying to avoid - anger, hurt, fear????. I agree with you the rug use stuff seems at time incongruent with Dr Patrick now. He had a beautiful conversation with Billie after she miscarried about trying to get unconscious but I think nothing since then has really got close to hitting the mark for me.

one of the frustrations for me is that he tends to be given better dialogue and be able to demonstrate compassion and care in scenes with others more so than with Nina - i'm thinking with Billie season 2, Jimmy an Zara season 3.

I wasn't a huge patrick fan in season 2 but over time in season 3 this changed and at times I found I had greater empathy for him than Nina. I think her inability to allow him to speak was extremely annpoying. Also she couldn't show him how much he meant to her an enganging in the Adam scenario so quickly an thoughtlessly and all the " i wish it never happened" "its a mistake" "its none of your business" stuff hardened my heart towards her a little.

  4. Ah, I agree with every you've said. Yes, angry and drunk Patrick was hilarious! And they definitely need to go into his drug history in more detail. They're just using it as a tool to explain his brooding nature but something like drug use affects a person's whole psyche, not just whether a person is grumpy a lot or not.

One thing you mentioned in early recaps that I thought was very very true was that Patrick was starting to become rather one dimensional in the beginning of season 3. As much as I love some sappy romance, and I know the first half of season 3 was more Nina-centered, I'm angry at the writers for reducing Patrick's role to just the consoler and listener. Consoling and listening is great! Only it was all about Nina and Matt Le Nevez hardly got to act - only perfect his kissing skills.

You make such a good point about Kate! She was in an abusive relationship and was not willing to talk about it at Isabella's birth AT ALL - and that was only 4 months ago. Surely she's not "back to normal" after just 4 months? I understand the writers have very little time, but an abusive relationship is a serious social issue, and it should be addressed as one.

Damn it, every day I get more excited about season 4 because of all of you. WHY MUST WE WAIT A WHOLE YEAR?! American shows have 23 episodes and only have 3 months gap between seasons, we have to wait a year for a season that's only 13 eps long. It's tragic.

  5. I'm not sure I can add anything new, I have been nodding and laughing as I read Felicity's post and the comments that followed.

One thing, I think he had some better lines in season 2 than season 3, I'm remembering his line about "drama and debaucery" aimed at Nina and Fraser before the hospital ball, the "you do know there's probably something wrong with you, could be Teurette's" line to Nina after they slept together twice but before their reunion in her apartment. Not to mention those scenes in her apartment writing that report!

I'd like to see season 4 and 5 be more about the ensemble cast as a whole, than the Nina-show. Relevant to this post about Patrick would be a strong desire to see and learn more about Kate, and learn more about Patrick's past with drugs - I've said this before, no need to do anything soap-opera-esque and have him relapse, there would be plenty of drama and angst in just talking about it, the kind of details Nadene refers to.

  6. 1) I would have loved to have another bed scene (STAY WITH ME PEOPLE!). Remember in season 2 how they lay in bed and spoke honestly to each other about their flaws - that they both suck at intimacy etc. To me this was such a perfect scene. He showed ample vulnerability, but at the same time you could see growth and strength gained from the scene as well. To me this was what was lacking in this season from both characters.

    2) I have said it before but I would also love more smartass smirky bantering Patrick? This is (for me) when Patrick is close to his funniest. Remember when he said that Nina may have a clinical issue, she said “fuck you” and he said “could be turrets” and looked at her with a smirk as she walked away. GOLD!

    3) Superficial request but could I also see him in pants that aren’t skinny jeans? I understand they are in fashion etc however when he wears them it makes him look like a thirty-something who is having a bit of an age crisis...Just a personal preference.

    4) Future things to be explored – Patricks caring and protective side.
    a) I would like to also see protective brother Patrick. I would like to see Patrick and Nina babysit Isabelle while Kate goes out on a date. Patrick could answer the door to prospective suiter. He would get all manly and interrogate the poor guy while they wait for Kate to come out dressed. Meanwhile, Nina would help Kate get ready (and probably providing misguided advise and over using accessories or something). Kate could express how nervous she is, maybe open up a bit to Nina, show that you don’t just recover instantly from an abusive relationship etc. It would be a generally good bonding moment between the sisters.
Kate would walk out into the living area and you would see Patrick all proud of how his little sister looks *tear*, then he would turn to the other guy who is probably mid-checking Kate out. It could be a very heartfelt yet funny scene. I would love him to quickly take Kate aside and tell him how proud he is of her etc.

    b) I would like him to show the caring/protective side to Nina. Not possessive, just caring and protective.

    2. Yes, more banter! :D I love that line, along with "There was no smirking at any time... I'm a non-smirker". XD

I love the scene you've thought up for Kate and Patrick. I love their relationship dynamic, and I really want it to be explored in more depth. Kate is only a minor character, yet her scenes are always so memorable. I can't wait to see more of her (:

  8. I went into this in the previous ‘wants and wishes blog’ but in hindsight and a few hours sleep later I think it belongs here with 'daylight' additions.

The dynamic between Patrick and Nina when arguing hasn’t really progressed very far nor grown throughout the relationship. After watching a fair bit of season 2 it seems to be the same formula used. It is characterised by the fact that they put on this front, and almost bait the other to “fight” for the relationship, yet aren’t willing to do it themselves (I call this “relationship chicken”).

Nina seems to be the rejection queen (in that she will end things if she doesn’t get the affirmation she is looking for) and Patrick is the silent assassin or deer in headlights. He seems to put on a front and say little of any consequence – or freeze at the moment when he *should* act or squeak up .....

Patrick seems to put on a front or stay silent, than put himself out there and be truly vulnerable with the risk of rejection. The sad thing is that the very vulnerability they are so scared to show is what they are looking for in each other and call the “relationship chicken” quits.

The first time that I believe that Patrick actually did change his pattern of behaviour was when he showed up on Nina’s doorstep after their amazing afternoon of ‘vase smashing relations’. Too bad he wasn’t sober! However while he changed his behaviour and acted to a degree, Nina still deflected him and left the poor guy in the emergency ward by himself :)

The only reason their reunion in the finale happened (I believe) is that he pounced on the unsuspecting Nina (who was too busy deflecting her family).

  9. Fee, I think you have summarised their dynamic perfectly - the relationship chicken- I love it.

    1. no problems - the 'd' on my keyboard works intermitently and most often I am writing with a 2 year old sitting on my head - so i am guilty of the typos also.
I just wanted to add that although i didn't love the dialogue perhaps Patrick's "pounce" maybe it is what will allow the writers to take the patrick and nina to the next stage of the relationship. "I want to be with you no matter what" is pretty encompassing and maybe it won't allow Patrick and Nina to wriggle away in the first moment it gets rough.
I think for season 4 an 5 to work the dynamic of relationship needs to go to the next level with increased exposure of their vulnerability to avoid basically repeating season 2 & 3 issues.

      Delete
    2. Nadene interesting you use the word pounce. I've just been rewatching s1-3 (breastfeeding so have lots of couch time:) and noticed that Patrick does a lot of the initiating and pounces on Nina a few times. .. Their initial get together, the report writing ep, he suggests they move in together out of the blue, the drunk get together etc....

I'm hoping that "I want to be with you no matter what" line means that he will become Nina's rock in season 4 as she gets all worked up about being pregnant. I would love next season to be about them working on their relationship rather than jumping into marriage etc. If they do get married I think it should be a season 5 (series end?) thing.

And here's my 2cents worth on the breakup. I think he never really wanted to breakup. I suspect he wanted say they had rushed into moving in together and taking their relationship to a more permanent thing? But Nina never lets he finish a sentence and starts to "push things up to some cliff" and being the defeatist that he is just goes with rather than fighting for what he really wants. The more I think about it season 2 was about Nina choosing to be with him and season 3 about him choosing to be with her?

And has anyone notice the Ainsworth is St Francis from the telemovie?

      Delete
    3. Hi Tina, can't take credit for the pounce description Fee used it first and I thought it was great.
I agree with you he has more ability to be spontaneous than Nina...and thats why he can reengage the relationship when she can't.
I don't think he wanted to break-up rather just have a discussion and it all got out of hand very quickly

  12. Jaira your comment made me laugh-I see you are still recovering! Can’t say I am a fan of shirtlessness but hey I am not complaining!

Fee I think your analysis is spot on - Nina seems to be the rejection queen (in that she will end things if she doesn’t get the affirmation she is looking for) is a far better summation than neurotic, needy Nina of the TV blurbs (though she isn’t looking for Brendan style affirmation of course). I think you said Patrick is the self-assassin which is also accurate. Look forward to your fan fiction!

And yes the “Patrick is a bit cool – Nina misunderstands and majorly over reacts – Patrick pushes her away - Patrick is contrite and loving” is getting a bit overused.

For me S2 seemed to be sort of the Mr Darcy template, you know a misunderstanding of personality at first with many missteps until you figure out the person behind the public face. The beginning of S3 was a major disappointment after that – it was like another person, no smart arsery, just being lovey dovey and supportive in a way that didn’t quite seem Patrick (agree with Owl here) – I nearly wrote off S3 at that point. And the latter part of S3 seemed to veer into Bronte territory, not quite Heathcliff perhaps but a Gothic Mr Rochester types certainly. Though the season did pick up from this point (I think the scene where Nina returns after the death of Rocket and Patrick is there to collect his things – Matt Le Nevez does both the first initial annoyance and then the holding back well) I think it was puzzling because S2 had a different take on the character. But I guess we have gone over this many times!

The Clegg speech scene in S2 actually seemed to sum up Patrick for me. He’s a little guarded and gauging in that scene, kind of judging Nina’s adoration for Chris and where he fits in the scheme of things. But he’s also amused – like that line about tipping back the head so that the drink goes down faster. And he is also amused by Clegg’s speech (unlike Chris but then again the Chris bit was badly written in S2, anyhow the sense of humour seems one of the differences between the two). I am not sure why they dropped this bit – and judging by the comments everyone misses that part of Patrick. So yeah definitely a Patrick Plus that needs to be back.

Patrick minuses, I agree that they need to delve into his past and be honest about it and not make the brooding clichéd or just make him another routine bad boy Nina is inexplicably attracted to. That is there will always be a slightly dark part to him and he will always be guarded but hopefully a bit tempered by being a bit happy with Nina, baby etc.! And as Nadene pointed out behind all that he is a good sort of person-the series does try to establish this to be fair.

And yeah more Kate (Kate Jenkinson is quite funny in a small role in Miss Fisher too).

PS: In some ways though perhaps leaving so many things unsaid is what makes Patrick intriguing and the subject of so much discussion :-)

PPS: I am still a bit unhappy about the Nina-Bio Dad relationship in spite of the last scene of S3. Surely Darcy-Nina-Phillip should have had a bit more angst than the way it was portrayed in S3-I thought exploring that was going to be a major part of S3 (like Lou said its an ensemble and not just Nina-Patrick). And “Nina is so much like Bio Dad” seems a bit harsh on Darcy who is in the end Nina’s father.

And Felicity, apologies for hijacking your blog! Though I haven’t enjoyed a discussion of this sort in a long time.

    4. I agree he was very my darcy like in season 2 and all the better for it. however Nina is no Elizabeth Bennett - she has more confidence. such a shame they didn't keep the darcy style wit and banter going in S3 - was much more entertaining.

Felicity you are being kind and thank you again.

Talking of novels, I am re-reading Eucalyptus and Asher would be so perfect for the lead (and Matt, no Nina-Patrick fan I am sure is going to let pass the idea of Asher-Matt as romantic leads in other things!). But films made from books always end up with wrong casting so not holding my breath....

    7. This isn't word spam at all! I love hearing what you (and everyone else) have to say. It's interesting how you made a connection between Season 2 Patrick and Mr. Darcy and how Season 3 was more Mr. Rochester. I never thought of that, but now that you say it, I agree with you.

Also, what you said about the Nina-Darcy-Phillip is really interesting. I completely love Dr. Noonan, and I liked how similar him and Nina are (although I did find the fact that his lovelife mirrors Nina to be pushing it). But I agree that there should have been more angst. In saying that, I did like whatever angst they did include - I especially enjoyed Darcy's line, "I am angry. But then I think of Nina and there'e nowhere for the anger to go." In fact, the Darcy/Nina scenes in early S3 were some of the most moving, I thought.

      Delete
    8. We keep analysing which template leads fall into - hence the Darcy/Rochester observation:-) Though Mr Rochester speaks a fair bit more!

I rewatched Ep 1 yesterday and it was actually better on rewatching - now that you know how it all unfolded you notice more. And I agree the Darcy/Nina anguish is there - it was quite moving towards the end of Ep 1. Now on to Ep 2!

      Delete
    9. on rewatching the beginning episodes of season 3 it made me realise how much more enjoyable to watch these episodes are than the latter half. I think maybe because the ensemble cast line stories are stronger in the 1st half or if not stronger not overshadowed by he break-up and heart-ache.
its been a long time since i read Jane Eyre but I recall Mr Rochester as being broody but also kind of harsh and at times cruel but i don't see those latter qualities in Patrick.
PS I think I did see a little of the S2 PAtrick/Mr Darcy in patricks expressions and smirking in the first 3 episodes- he just doesn't get a lot of great dialogue.

      Delete
    10. Nadene seen up to Ep 3 and I agree that Patrick has a lot of non-verbal smirking and general amusement at the goings on - I liked the scene where he laughs about Nina's father being a parking inspector/doc. The first time you are concentrating on the storyline and Nina but a second viewing you can see all the other details and performances so its more enjoyable(there are a few errors but I don't want to be like the IMDB nitpickers!).

Mr Rochester is rather unique what with a mad wife in the attic etc! so its just the brooding and the bad temper that made me call Patrick more Rochester and less Darcy this season.

      And yes S4 - Patrick - get a house....with a shed.

      Delete
    11. Sombrefilly - I am reading a book on archetypes of heros and heroines in literature/film and I get where you are coming from with the Healthcliff/ Rochester/ Patrick thing now. They are all lost soul archetypes. reading it makes me realise Patrick was probably quite a different person before the loss & addiction possibly more along the lines of Darcy. so this mould and the lost soul aspect are blended in his characterisation. would that make sense to your understanding?

      Delete
    12. Hi Nadene, you are right Patrick is more lost soul than bad boy I think. Darcy/Elizabeth is the classic template of clashes and misunderstanding followed by love. Whereas Mr Rochester is a bit damaged and cruel but still capable of love when he meets someone like Jane who is upright. And there are the secrets – like Mr Rochester “neglects” to inform Jane of an existing wife! Rochester is however kind to his employees and can be quite witty (which come to think of it Mr Darcy is not). Actually Adam is also a bit of a St John Rivers – the missionary who falls for Jane but is a bit too rigid and pious for her.

Both Darcy and Rochester are however generally glowering and grumpy so well they have that in common to Patrick!

Of course modern heroes depart in many ways from this template. But the modern take is more pro Mr Darcy and very much anti Mr Rochester (Kate Beaton has some very funny cartoons on this and The Hairpin recently did Texts from Jane Eyre for anyone interested in old novels). Therefore not surprised that S3 Patrick is not to everyone’s liking.

I haven’t figured out the Chris Havel thing....my take is he wouldn’t leave his family aka he is available to Nina only if his wife clearly severs ties as in S2. Though I also think S1 is not about Nina-Chris but more about the single woman today, everything in it is uncertain except Nina’s career.

      Delete
    13. thanks for your feedback. my new book (bible!) later explains the evolution and layering of archetypes so I think it will cover the modern hero like Patrick better there.

Agree with you on Season 1 it was focussed on Nina as the single career woman. I think of all the archetypes Chris Havel is a bit of a best friend archetype - calm, capable, soothing and trustworthy. his approach to Nina was I'm here if you need but not going to fight overly hard to get you or make your choice difficult in anyway . and staying with his wife was about the gentelmanly, principled parts of him which do not allow him to put himself first rather he must meet the needs of others.

      Delete
    14. another example of CHris Havel as bestfriend archetype is when Nina doesn't let Chris in and later confesses to sleeping with Mick. Chris takes it all in his stride without question or judgement. "no problem... I completely understand that you rejected me because you were in bed with your sister's boyfriend we all make mistakes like this..now when can we schedule our next date..?"
I think its unlikely that Chris-Nina together would have satisfied the audience in the longer term because of his inability to challenge Nina.

      Delete
    15. The best friend angle is interesting and rings true and lol at the taking in stride monologue! And neither does Nina challenge Chris sufficiently to break out of his situation? Unlike Patrick who is having to reassess a lot of things and also acts - eventually - on it.

If I may ask what's the name of the new Bible?! Might check it out.

      Delete
    16. of course - the new bible is the Complete writers guide to heroes and heroines: sixteen master archetypes. by viders, cowden and lafever. it was $10 on kindle.

my background is clinical psychology not literature/ analysis so its a welcome addition to my understanding of what I read/ watch as I have not studied from this perspective since high school. although a lot of the reviews are from people who write. It actually ties in with my work/ real life quite nicely as well. One archetype completely nails my husband's character - I cannot tell you how much my jaw dropped as reading it. Haven't read heroines section yet but may be in for some home truths!!

    17. Thanks Nadene, will go and check it out now.

    18. must share this excerpt from the arcehtype book as it is so perfectly Patrick:
"remember Beast from Beauty and the beast. the challenge for this hero is to open up his Lost Soul heart and allow Belle to soothe him and change him back into a Chief . Taking a risk on love is scary for a man who has isolated himself. But to break the curse put upon him, Beast must stop sulking and take decisive action"
Chief is the name the book gives the Darcy archetype

    19. That's beautiful and so apt Nadene, thanks for sharing!

    20. I read a few articles on the book Nadene and just saw your comment. The book sounded interesting.

Finished a rewatch of S3. And jotted down stuff along the way.

      *Yes Patrick enough sulking!
*Ep 13 still bad bar end (that end along with Nina& Patrick in bed discussing Bon Jovi etc in S2 are the top moments of Offspring IMO).
*A bit overwhelmed by the colour scheme - turquoise and coral (Nina) and green (Patrick).
*Costume folk stop giving the men on the show cleavage revealing tees– if you have to put the men on display shirtless is better than awful trends in fashion.
*Please get Patrick something to wear that is not black or grey. Along with a change of sheets.
*I should ship Jimmy-Zara but don’t. Maybe this is because I simply can’t get on board the Jimmy Train. Sadly I am not terribly interested in their S4 dilemmas.
*I shouldn’t ship Doc Dad-Geraldine but I do and maybe this is because I am totally on board the Garry McDonald-Linda Cropper train. So hope Doc Dad is around more.
*I note that Felicity has deep love for Eddie (I read all her Offspring reviews) but he was annoying and whingey and had the same expression throughout S3. Maybe it’s the absence of force of nature Kat Stewart...hopefully she stirs up S4 a bit.
*Clegg is too good for Cherie-get him a weird Professor love interest! (to borrow from Nadene’s book I think Clegg is a Professor type?)
*Kim is perfect. Kate is perfect. Never change. Though Kate deserves a nice man.
*Love interests who are mere distractions don’t have surnames (Frazer, Adam). That should be a clue for next season triangles :-)
*Asher and Kat are the obvious stars of the show-one can watch them forever. But damn if I know what MLN does to make one tolerate almost any scene he is in no matter how badly scripted (and I am not even one of the Patrick is hot hot hot group).

Importantly inspite of all its flaws it made me happy (to paraphrase its endlessly played song). It has a sense of joy that’s absent in many better TV dramas. So hopefully S4 and 5 retain that.

    21. Well done on getting to the end of S3. I have just watched the break-up episode and the Adam episode and can't seem to go further. I just found season 3 so filled with tension from this point on - all the mis-steps just killed me.
Fraser does get a last name Fraser King so maybe no last name is a clue for male characters who get no action with Nina...

Yes Clegg is the ultimate professor - and how fitting with his character is his princess and the pea clitoris speech when Patrick wants to leave the hospital. its starts with just sleep on it and ends up with funny piece!

I agree on Mick - he was pretty annoying excent when in the farewell scene with Andrew which i quite liked.

I agree with you on MLN - there is something about his acting style that is so watchable. for me his ability to convey feeling through expression alone and often without dialogue is extraordinary. he has brought me to tears so many times in season 3 its ridiculous.

and Yay to the joy that they create in offspring. and the other unique quality is a lack of cynicism.

    22. It does get heavy going from the break up point on.....and the break up seems to be about a potential baby down the road and Patrick's fear of losing control again, can't find anything else to it.

Oh yes Fraser has a surname! And the Clegg lines were all gold. I had to resist the urge to write them all down.

Dan Spielman is great as Andrew. Agree on MLN and the ability to emote through small details. And yay again for the joy and positivity!

    23. the break-up reasons do seem clearer on second watching. the frustration for me still is that the conversation around the break-up just finishes with one fight and was unbelievable. in reality for such a singificant relationship I think they would have had many conversations and some attempt to talk things through.

i think what the writers do really well is capture this element of panicky out of control spiral of "what is happening to us here, is this really happening?" kind of element. when you watch the first time your filled with this "i can't believe this, what are they doing" like watching a car crash you can't stop which is close to how the characters would feel.

      Delete
    24. Exactly - and there is no hint that there have been several conversations on the issue.

I know - the viewer is also along for the panicky wtf is happening here ride!

  13. I just wanted to echo Martin Clegg's description of Patrick in narration of Nina's fantasy at the start of episode 4, Season 3: "A dark self-flagellating anaesthetist". I mean really, why would you continue to be an anaesthetist, and in an obstetrics ward, if you're a drug addict who's lost a baby???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. emmerr, i have thought this so many times. its a bit of a non-senseical part of the plot I think that he would work in an obstetric ward in the first place

    2. I've got family who work in hospitals, specifically midwifery and apparently Patrick would be hired in the public system, but the private would avoid the lawsuit potential he brings even as a recovered addicted.

    3. Maybe he got let in the back door at St Francis' because he is Clegg's bestie.

perhaps the idea is that after 5 years he's supposed to be sufficiently at terms with the loss to be able to handle the idea of being around all the new babies and the drugs. either way I did find it interesting to rewatch the episode in which Nina and Patrick assist in delivering Louise's stillborn baby now knowing the whole story. somehow he does not seem as affected as you might think given how much he is later troubled by sharing his personal story of loss with Billie and then later Nina. he does talk about the concept of keeping separate compartments in the mind for work and the personal so maybe thats how it all works.

  14. One thing about Patrick's character that's been annoying me. When did he become a teetotaller?

He drank in season 2. He brought wine to Nina's house when they wrote the report (although it probably didn't get opened with the all banter and sexing). He was holding a wine glass when all the Proudman's came to his house for dinner. He drank at Martin's book launch. And there was a glass of what looked like a spirit of some kind when he was going through he bookshelf and Kate came and told him to grow a spine.

Skip to season 3 and all of a sudden he doesn't drink.

    There, that's it.

    1. YES. I noticed that too! It's a massive oversight.

    2. and didn't they drink before they set Nina's apartment on fire as well? that would make it season 3 drinking too.
I like you was surprised by the whole "now your drinking" an kates "drinking is just not good for him" discussion with Doc Dad.

      Delete
    3. YES Jenny! As soon as I saw this comment, I was thinking because I missed a few season two episodes explaining this but then they'd stuffed continunity. It REALLY bugged me in the last few eps that his behaviour was linked to drinking when the past it wasn't a problem.

I'd be okay if they tried to explain it next year by indicating Patrick's not good drinking when he's upset - he makes terrible choices or something.

      Delete
    4. Yeah they did seem overly keen to emphasise that he wasn't doing drugs or that the drinking was an aberration. Maybe they meant hitting the bottle as opposed to the occasional drink but it was annoying - I think Felicity also mentioned the random drug reference (when Clegg and Patrick have a talk) in one post!

  16. Ok no idea where to post this - it is the first installment of my interpretation of the final episode.

    Part 1.

As Nina looked down upon her precious little nephew Alfie, she was overwhelmed with emotion. He had only been in their lives for a short time, but already held such importance to the whole Proudman family. He symbolised hope, hope for them all, that things can be better. She reached into the crib and touched his tiny fingers. ‘You have to be ok’ she said, trying to get rid of the lump in her throat. ‘You have changed our world” she said holding the tears back.

Nina had felt sick to the stomach since she realised that she wasn’t pregnant. How can you feel so much for someone that never existed? It was an overwhelming sense of emptiness for something that was never there to begin with. Patrick’s words about his son Gus echoed in her memory. She knew what she was experiencing was the tip of the iceberg compared to what he went through. She hated that she would have to tell him there was no baby. There was no reason to think that Patrick ever wanted children. After all, he did bail on the relationship when he thought she might want children in the future. . Nina wasn’t sure what would be worse, Patrick being relieved, or seeing the pain resonate in his eyes of yet another loss.

Nina glanced down at her watch and realised she had been daydreaming for a good 10 minutes. She leant down and whispered “bye little angel” before she made a hasty exit from the hospital room and headed for the car park.

Up at the car park, Patrick was waiting for Nina. He was full of excitement and nerves waiting for her at her car. All he had wanted was to wrap her up in his arms and hold her for a very long while. He just wanted to tell her how he felt, not just about the baby but about her. The last year had been a rollercoaster of emotion. He knew that he still was deeply in love with Nina, and that the time they had been apart was excruciating. However at the same time, he was aware of the damage he had caused Jodie in the past and it scared him to death that he would do the same thing to Nina. Yet despite all of this, the prospect of a baby…. it was a game changer.

The last conversation he had with Nina had not gone as planned. When she said she didn’t want to be together in misery, his hopes sank, and as if mute, he was unable to speak.

However despite being lost for words previously, Patrick was determined to not let this happen again. This time it would be different. His attention was suddenly drawn to the stairwell with the door opening. Yes it was Nina!

As Nina walked up into the car park and spotted Patrick, panic and dread entered her body. She was not ready for this conversation. What was she going to say? She took a deep breath and told herself – breath, do not cry, just walk.

They both walked towards each other in the car park, each with a very different sense of anticipation for the conversation ahead……

  19. I don’t think I have much to add to the fabulous comments already made, but one thing. I remember in the big break-up fight they had in episode 5 of season 3, in the empty operating theatre, one of the lines Nina said was “why won’t you even try” and Patrick said “I’m not brave like you.”

This has stuck in my head, maybe I have a different take on this stuff - I should explain I’m mid 30’s, and last year was diagnosed with breast cancer. My single biggest fear is I might not get to see my children (now 2 yrs and 4 yrs) grow up – I probably will, I am more likely to be healthy than not healthy now my treatment is over, but compared to someone else my age, without my medical history, there is a not insignificant chance I will get either recurrence or secondaries that I can’t beat. I have to live with that fear every day, and I DO live with it, I live my life, I don’t lie in bed awake at 3am every night worrying about it. Sure I have my woe-is-me moments, but that fear isn’t stopping me doing anything.

I remember watching that scene and thinking “you want to talk about living with fear, I’ll give you living with fear!” – oh the stuff I wanted to say to that man! I kept thinking about his lack of “seize the day” attitude and something about “a life half lived” if he keeps that up. The fabulous stuff he is missing out on because of something that might or might not happen in the future.

And I do understand what he is scared of, I know absolutely nothing about addiction, but sadly I know plenty about stillbirth, one of my closest friends (who I watch Offspring with each week, on her couch!) lost her daughter at 38 weeks in 2010, so I do totally understand why he is frightened, it’s such a horrible ghastly loss. For what it’s worth, my friend has had another baby since, the pregnancy was a very stressful and anxious time for her and her husband, there were times of tension between them when they weren’t experiencing the stress in the same way, and the new baby will never replace the daughter they lost, but the new baby is also utterly divine and they are very happy now.

Maybe I am waffling and this may make no sense to anyone else!

    1. Lou not waffling at all and good to know things are looking up on the health front for you.

I think Patrick stuffed up so badly the first time that he is unable to have the carpe diem attitude. Which happens.

I saw the break-up episode last night and still remain unconvinced. People do break up for seemingly random reason and say things they do not mean. But the script has to make clear what’s going on underneath the words being spoken. The scene and everything that went before didn’t seem to convey this fully even on a second viewing.

The way the episode ended it seemed like the break up was a chance for both of them to grow out of their own idiosyncrasies and come to a better understanding but of course we know Adam came along to fill in a few episodes and make it seem more like a triangle to be resolved rather than Nina and Patrick facing up to their issues. Adding a character is great from a TV drama point of view but it didn’t seem to add much to the plot in this case.

    2. I love revisiting old episodes. I get a different experience out of it each time. I watched the final ep again - and cried..

I think it will just be very interesting to see what happens..

Oh and I had the strangest thought as well today. Imagine if something happens to Rosanna's character and for some random reason he ends up living with Mick and Billie... Very random thought - just putting it out there.

      Delete
    3. yeah re-viewing gives an entirely different flavour.

Rosanna isn't adding much is she? The Mick connection with Ivy seemed more genuine.

  20. No, you make perfect sense. Firstly, it's really cool to hear you say you have this fear but that you're able to live with it. And it's great to know you're cancer free. :) And you're right, it's this sort of carpe diem attitude Patrick really lacks. And it's criticised by the show as well, with Nina indirectly and indirectly calling him a coward and people like Clegg saying things like 'I assume you're running scared.' It's one of the major flaws in his character, and I hope they show his development well through the pregnancy. Your friend's story was very touching and I hope Offspring gives the pregnancy plotline the depth it deserves.

    1. Not waffling at all - we all bring our personal experiences to the table when interpreting this stuff.

Its definitely a flaw for Patrick that he prefers to avoid risk and it was so frustrating to see he hadn't really moved forward in S3. sometimes he does leap- like when he reconnects with Nina after 'running scared' but he struggles to stay there.

I think with Patrick the experence of stillbirth coupled with almost disintegriating through addiction and destroying his marriage in the process is why moving forward with Nina is so difficult. I do think if they had given him a more complete back story maybe some of his behaviour would make more sense to us. If you compare Mick's back story to Patrick's its so much more padded out and makes it easier to understand Mick.

  24. I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
